SP: Satellite

I found these satellites while on a balcony around wintertime. I had to wait till summer to take the photo at a good angle which includes the sun near sunset.

  1. Harry – this is a beautiful photograph. I love it for many reasons.
The frame you have chosen is very bold. It is a combination of skyline, skyscape and cityscape. By leaving such a vast expanse of empty sky, you have gracefully united the clouds, the sun, the satellite dishes and antennas all on one level. By doing so, and creating such a sharp contrast between empty sky and the elements, you engender a concentrated energy that brings the picture to life.
The light source compliments this contrast between empty sky and elements. The empty, and darkening sky, which is about two-thirds of the picture, helps accentuate the other third of the picture, emphasizing the brightness of the sun and the elements it is lighting. It is the contrasts present in this composition that fill it with such vitality: between emptiness and crowdedness, between nature and the city, between depth and proximity, between light and dark.
You have chosen to integrate the light source with the objects. The light source is not separate from the elements that it is lighting. This is very interesting conceptually. Having the sun on the same level, but not the same plane, as the objects and the clouds, creates complicity between the sun, the clouds and the antennas protruding from the city. In other words, the sun is not only a celestial body, belonging to the sky or an abstract light source, it is also a life-force participating in and animating the city.
With a very minimalist and elegant composition you have conveyed an aesthetically powerful and conceptually gratifying photograph, which is no small achievement by any standard. Bravo!
